IN FOCUS: Lisette Model

Lisette Model was an Austrian born, American photographer who focused on frank, often clandestine portaiture. During a visit to Nice in 1934, she produced some of her most respected and recognized work, which would later come to define her signature style. Strolling through the Promenade des Anglais, Model photographed the local privilaged class in an unusually honest fashion, capturing their most vulnerable and authentic moments of expression. Fascinated with the human condition, Model devoted her artistic career to documenting a tremendous range of subjects and situations, approaching the mundane with equal significance to the peculiar. She was a true visionary who anticipated the emergence of an increasingly voyeuristic and interconnected world, precipitating the imminent popularization of street photography.
